The Anunayake of Malwatta Maha Vihare Venerable Dimbulkumure Dhammakeerthi Thera in an anusasanawa said that one has to abide by the ruling of the Health authorities in the conduct of the Kandy Esala Perahera. The Thera said that the country should not fall like on the last New Year day.
The Thera also said that there have been instances during the Brtish regime when the Perahera was stopped and even during other times. But the rituals have been continued within the Sri Dalada Malgawa.
Devotees are keen to show their children the first Kumbal Perahera as they believe that blessings come to them. The only alternative is to watch the Perahera on Television screens which also in one would given the children what they deserve.
The Anunayake was delivering the Anusasanawa when a meeting was called for the arrangements for the Kandy Esala Perhera by the District Secretary Chandana Tenakoon as to how the State could help the arrangments for the Kandy Esala Perahera ritual to parade the streets for eleven days. The conduct of the Perahera is the prerogative of the Diyawadana Nilame and he alone is responsible for the conduct of the Perahera ritual
The Diyawadana Nilame formally announced the dates scheduled to hold the Kandyh Esasala Perahera in Kandy. He said that on the 9th of August ‘ Kap ‘ would be planted at the four Devales at 1.09 am. From this date the Perahera’s would be held within the Devale’s and the Sri Dalada Maligaw for five days. Kumbal Perahera would be held from the 13th August to the 17th August. Randoli would commence on the 18th August to end on the 22nd as the final night of Poya Day. On the 23rd of August the Day Perahera would be held and on the same day the Diyawadana Nilame and the Basnayske Nilames are scheduled to present the ‘ Sanasa ‘ that the Perahera had been sucessfully concluded.
The meeting was held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Auditorium
The Diywadana Nilame Praeep Nilanga Dela told the ‘ Sunday Times ” that no decision had been taken and there is time for a conferment of the Perahera in consultation with the Health authorities and whether devotees would be allowed within the Perahera area
The Heath authorities who were present at the meeting conveyed the number of patients and the amount who had passed away in the Kandy District and the areas that have been quarantined. They said that the Director-General of Health Services would be consulted on this issue before the net meeting which is called by the Diyawadana Nilame in association with the District Secretary
The Tri – Forces representatives, the Police, Kandy Municipal Council representatives and the Basnauake Nilames of the four Devales were present who discussed the alocation of buildings to house the atisties who would be in the Perahera and other matters that are connected to the Devales.
