A workshop conducted by the Press Council wa held at the Kandy Secretariat
chaired by the Chairman of the Press Council,Priyantha R.Wijebandara. This is pefrshps the first time a Chairman had been present at a worskshop of this naure.
Provincial reporters who were present added their views and called upon Press Council to work out a policy so that ‘ new ‘ people would join this profession. The most important factor they claimed was the scale of payments and that the old ‘ lineage ‘ system has to be worked out for the current needs of the people
It was also ;pointed out that the Law for the prtection of Provincial reporters are there in the statute to be implemented by the state through the Labour deartment whch is not implemented by the departgment. It is a policy matter and that the Press Council should, they added should take these needs further
Among those present were Senior Lecturer Wijenanda Rupasinghe, Senior Journalist Anura K.Edirisuriya, Deputy Commissioner Suresen Iranga,Distrcit Secretary Indika Udawatte. Press Cpmmissioner Niroshan Tambivita.
